One incredible granite block

Between 1902 and 1904, on Captain Scott’s Antartic Discovery Expedition, the ship RRS Discovery was locked in ice.

The RRS Discovery was the last traditional wooden three-masted ship to be built in Britain.

The ship’s construction and its history inspired Marion Smith to slice through a 27 tonne block of granite and create a unique sculpture. Standing proud this beautiful structure is a memorial not only to Scott’s expedition but also to The Dundee Shipbuilders Company.
